A new coffee table photography book, “Remembering Lions,” will be published later this year to raise money for lion conservation. The project was created by wildlife photographer Margot Raggett. Other photographers contributing to the book include Marsel van Oosten, Steven Winter, Art Wolfe and Frans Lanting. The group has also launched a Kickstarter campaign which has already raised over $600,000 for conservation projects throughout Africa and Asia.
Lion populations in Africa are declining at an alarming rate due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal trade, hunting, and lion-human conflict. It is estimated that there are less than 20,000 lions living in the wild.
Here are some amazing images from the book.
A pair of lionesses, photographed by Chad Cocking in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. The Timbavati Association was formed in 1956 by landowners wanting to restore the area’s natural beauty. In 1993, the fences between Kruger National Park and the Timbavati Reserve were taken down to allow for the natural movement of species between the two areas.
“Scar” is a famous lion living in Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve. He was named after the Disney character from the The Lion King movie. Scar lost his right eyelid in a battle over territory. The Reserve is located in southwest Kenya. Maasai Mara Reserve is home to over 95 different mammal species.
