The Northeast African cheetah, a critically endangered wild cat, also known as the Sudan cheetah, can be found in South Sudan and Ethiopia.
Scientific Name: Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii
Conservation Status: Critically Endangered
Like its closest relative, the southeastern cheetah, the Northeast African cheetah is a large wild cat with lots of black spots covering thick fur. It has a white belly, white patches around its eyes, and a black or white-tipped tail.
Northeastern cheetahs inhabit grasslands and open areas with a lot of prey, such as gazelles, hares, guineafowls, zebras, ostriches, and hartebeests.
Sometimes lions, wild dogs and hyenas will steal the cheetah’s food.
Like other wild cats, the Northeast African cheetah is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and declining prey populations.
